Questions from this subtopic
Each one with the model answer underneath.
- 1
What is a policy in a care setting?
Model answer
A policy is a written statement of what an organisation will do about a particular matter and how staff must act, translating the law and professional standards into instructions for that setting.
- 2
What is the difference between a policy and a procedure?
Model answer
A policy states what the organisation's position is and why; a procedure sets out the steps a worker actually follows to carry it out. A safeguarding policy says the organisation will protect service users; the procedure says who to tell and by when.
- 3
What does a confidentiality policy set out?
Model answer
A confidentiality policy states what information is treated as confidential, who may see it, how records are stored and transmitted, and the circumstances in which information must be shared without consent, such as a risk of serious harm.
- 4
When may confidentiality be broken?
Model answer
Confidentiality may be broken where there is a risk of serious harm to the service user or to somebody else, where a child or vulnerable adult may be at risk, where a court orders disclosure, or where the law otherwise requires it.
- 5
What must a whistle-blowing policy set out, and why is it needed?
Model answer
A whistle-blowing policy must name who a concern is raised with, provide a route that bypasses the line manager where the manager is part of the problem, allow a concern to be raised in confidence, and state that no action will be taken against a worker who raises a genuine one. Without it, workers who see poor practice stay silent for fear of the consequences.
- 6
What protection does a whistle-blowing policy give a worker?
Model answer
A whistle-blowing policy sets out who a concern is raised with, promises that a worker raising a genuine concern will not be victimised or dismissed for doing so, and provides a route outside the line manager where the manager is part of the problem.
