Questions from this subtopic
Each one with the model answer underneath.
- 1
Define dignity in a care setting.
Model answer
Dignity in care means treating a person so that their sense of self-worth stays intact. Nothing done to a person or in front of them should leave them feeling humiliated.
- 2
What does showing respect to a service user involve?
Model answer
Showing respect involves valuing a person's identity, beliefs and preferences, taking their views seriously, and treating their time and property as mattering.
- 3
Give four practical ways a care worker protects dignity during personal care.
Model answer
A care worker closes the door and curtains, covers the parts of the body not being washed, explains each step before doing it, and asks the person how they would like it done.
- 4
Distinguish privacy from dignity.
Model answer
Privacy is freedom from being seen, overheard or intruded upon, while dignity is the wider sense of being treated as a person of worth, which privacy is one means of protecting.
- 5
Why does using the name and title a person prefers matter?
Model answer
Using a person's preferred name and title recognises them as an adult with an identity of their own. A nickname nobody asked permission for can make an older person feel like a child.
- 6
Give two ways a nursing home can respect a resident's religious practice.
Model answer
A nursing home can provide a quiet space and undisturbed time for prayer. Staff can also follow a person's own wishes about washing and dress after death.
