- 1
What is meant by an indicator of abuse?
Model answer
An indicator of abuse is a sign in a child's body, behaviour or circumstances that may suggest the child is being harmed.
- 2
Why is an indicator not proof of abuse?
Model answer
A single sign often has an innocent explanation, so staff record and report what they see and leave the investigation to those trained to carry it out.
- 3
Give three physical indicators of physical abuse.
Model answer
Unexplained bruising, burns or scalds in unusual places, and bite marks or injuries in the shape of an implement are three physical indicators.
- 4
Why is bruising on a baby who is not yet crawling or walking a serious concern?
Model answer
A baby who cannot move independently cannot bruise themselves, so any bruise on an immobile baby needs an explanation and a referral.
- 5
Which sites of bruising raise more concern than others?
Model answer
Bruising to the ears, neck, cheeks, buttocks, abdomen and inner thighs raises more concern than bruising to shins, knees and forehead, where children ordinarily fall.
- 6
Give two features of an explanation for an injury that should raise concern.
Model answer
An explanation that does not fit the injury, and an explanation that changes between one telling and the next, should both raise concern.
