Questions from this subtopic

Each one with the model answer underneath.

  1. 1

Why is a baby under one at particular risk of physical abuse?

    Model answer

A baby cannot tell anyone what has happened, is physically fragile, and cries and wakes in ways that exhaust a carer who has no support.

  2. 2

Explain why a child with a disability faces a higher risk of abuse.

    Model answer

A child with a disability depends on adults for intimate care, may have no reliable way of communicating what is happening, and is less likely to be believed if they do tell.

  3. 3

Which characteristics of a child are associated with a raised risk of abuse?

    Model answer

A child is at raised risk where they are very young and cannot tell anyone, where a disability or a communication difficulty makes disclosure harder, where a long-term illness or challenging behaviour adds to the strain on a carer, and where the child is looked after away from home. None of these causes abuse; each makes a child more vulnerable to it and less able to report it.

  4. 4

How does poverty increase the risk of child abuse?

    Model answer

Poverty brings constant stress about money, food and heating, and a parent using every resource simply to cope has little patience or attention left for a child.

  5. 5

How does unemployment raise the risk of abuse?

    Model answer

Unemployment removes income, routine and status, and the frustration and depression that follow can spill over into how a parent treats a child.

  6. 6

Why is social isolation a risk factor?

    Model answer

An isolated parent has nobody to take the child for an hour, nobody to model good parenting and nobody outside the home who would notice that something was wrong.
