- 1
What is verbal communication?
Model answer
Verbal communication is the use of spoken words to exchange information. The choice of words and the way the voice delivers them are both part of it.
- 2
Give three settings in which verbal communication is the main method a care worker uses.
Model answer
A reassuring conversation during personal care and a handover at the end of a shift rely mainly on verbal communication. A telephone call to a relative does the same.
- 3
Why is clarity of speech important when talking to a service user?
Model answer
Clear speech at a steady volume with distinct words is far easier to follow. A person with hearing loss or reduced concentration then has the best chance of taking it in first time.
- 4
Explain how the pace of speech affects understanding.
Model answer
Speech delivered too quickly gives a person no time to process each idea, while speech slowed to an exaggerated crawl can sound patronising, so a moderate pace with pauses works best.
- 5
What does the tone of a practitioner's voice communicate?
Model answer
Tone carries the practitioner's attitude, so a warm and even tone signals patience while a sharp or flat tone signals irritation whatever the words say.
- 6
What is jargon, and why is it a problem in a care setting?
Model answer
Jargon is specialist vocabulary used inside a profession, and it leaves a service user unable to follow an explanation about their own care.
