How does professional culture create difficulty?
Questions from this subtopic
Each one with the model answer underneath.
- 1
What is interdisciplinary team working?
Model answer
Interdisciplinary team working is professionals from different disciplines working together around one person, sharing assessment and planning so that their contributions form a single coordinated package rather than separate interventions.
- 2
How does an interdisciplinary team differ from a multidisciplinary one?
Model answer
In a multidisciplinary team each professional works to their own plan and reports separately. In an interdisciplinary team they plan together and agree shared goals, so the boundaries between the roles are more open.
- 3
Who might be in the team around a person discharged from hospital after a stroke?
Model answer
The team might include a consultant, a ward nurse, a physiotherapist, an occupational therapist, a speech and language therapist, a dietitian, a hospital social worker, a district nurse, a home care worker and the person's family carer.
- 4
What is a case conference?
Model answer
A case conference is a meeting of everybody involved in a person's care, and where possible the person and their family, to share what each knows, agree what needs to happen, and decide who will do it and by when.
- 5
Give four benefits of effective interdisciplinary working.
Model answer
The person tells their story once rather than to everyone; needs that fall between services are picked up; duplication and contradictory advice are avoided; and decisions are better because they draw on several kinds of expertise.
- 6
How does interdisciplinary working benefit the staff themselves?
Model answer
Staff learn from one another's disciplines, share the weight of difficult decisions, and get support in distressing cases, which reduces isolation and improves retention.
