Questions from this subtopic
Each one with the model answer underneath.
- 1
Which body leads health improvement and health protection in Northern Ireland?
Model answer
The Public Health Agency, established under the Health and Social Care (Reform) Act (Northern Ireland) 2009, leads health improvement, health protection and service development, and runs public health campaigns.
- 2
What does health protection cover?
Model answer
Health protection covers infectious disease surveillance and outbreak control, immunisation programmes, screening, environmental hazards, food and water safety, and planning for emergencies.
- 3
What is a screening programme, and what does one require to be worthwhile?
Model answer
A screening programme tests people without symptoms to find a condition early. To be worthwhile the condition must be important and detectable early, the test must be accurate and acceptable, effective treatment must exist, and the benefit must outweigh the harm of false results.
- 4
Why does immunisation protect people who are not immunised?
Model answer
When a high enough proportion of a population is immune the infection cannot spread easily, so those who cannot be immunised — the very young, and people whose immune systems are suppressed — are protected indirectly. This is herd immunity.
- 5
How do Health and Social Care Trusts contribute to public health?
Model answer
Trusts deliver health visiting, school nursing, smoking cessation, sexual health and addiction services, and they run local health improvement work alongside their treatment services.
- 6
What do local councils in Northern Ireland contribute to public health?
Model answer
Councils are responsible for environmental health, including food safety and pollution; for leisure and recreation facilities; and, since the reform of local government in 2015, for community planning, which requires them to work with other bodies on the well-being of their area.
