- 1
Name six purposes of communication in a health, social care or early years setting.
Model answer
Communication builds relationships and offers support, gets to know service users and their needs, and promotes interaction between group members. Communication also negotiates and liaises with others, explains procedures and exchanges information.
- 2
How does communication build a relationship with a new resident?
Model answer
Learning a new resident's name, history and preferences, and using them in ordinary conversation, tells that person they are known rather than processed. Trust between a resident and a service begins there.
- 3
Give two ways a practitioner offers emotional support through communication.
Model answer
A practitioner offers support by listening without hurrying the person and by acknowledging the feeling rather than rushing to fix the problem.
- 4
Why does getting to know a service user improve the care given?
Model answer
Knowing a person's usual manner lets staff notice when something has changed, and knowing their preferences lets support be offered in a way they will accept.
- 5
Give two ways a group worker promotes interaction between group members.
Model answer
A group worker can invite a quieter member by name to add their view. Seating people so that they face one another rather than the leader also helps.
- 6
Why is promoting interaction between group members valuable in a day centre?
Model answer
Interaction between members reduces isolation, builds friendships that continue outside the session, and lets people learn from others facing the same situation.
