How does carbon monoxide in tobacco smoke affect the circulatory system?
Questions from this subtopic
Each one with the model answer underneath.
- 1
How does carbon monoxide in tobacco smoke affect the circulatory system?
Model answer
Carbon monoxide binds to haemoglobin in place of oxygen, so less oxygen reaches the tissues and the heart must work harder to compensate.
- 2
What effect does nicotine have on the heart and blood vessels?
Model answer
Nicotine raises heart rate and narrows blood vessels, which pushes up blood pressure and makes a clot more likely to form.
- 3
How does tar in tobacco smoke damage the airways?
Model answer
Tar paralyses and destroys the cilia lining the airways, so mucus and trapped particles collect in the lungs and infection becomes far more likely.
- 4
Name the two conditions that make up chronic obstructive pulmonary disease.
Model answer
Chronic obstructive pulmonary disease covers chronic bronchitis and emphysema, and smoking is by far its most common cause.
- 5
What happens to the lungs in emphysema?
Model answer
In emphysema the walls between the alveoli break down into fewer, larger spaces, cutting the surface area for gas exchange and leaving the person breathless.
- 6
What happens to the airways in chronic bronchitis?
Model answer
In chronic bronchitis the airways are permanently inflamed and produce excess mucus, causing a persistent cough and repeated chest infections.
