- 1
What is non-verbal communication?
Model answer
Non-verbal communication is everything a person conveys without words, including facial expressions, eye contact, posture, gestures, touch, proximity and appearance.
- 2
Name six forms of non-verbal communication a care worker uses every day.
Model answer
Facial expressions, eye contact, posture, gestures, touch and the distance kept from a person are six forms used every day.
- 3
Why do facial expressions matter so much when caring for somebody who cannot follow speech?
Model answer
A person with advanced dementia or a young child often reads the face rather than the words, so a calm and friendly expression carries the reassurance the sentence cannot.
- 4
How does eye contact support a conversation with a service user?
Model answer
Steady but not fixed eye contact shows the person that they have the practitioner's attention. Eye contact also lets the practitioner see whether the person is following.
- 5
Give one reason a practitioner should not insist on eye contact.
Model answer
Some autistic people find eye contact uncomfortable and some cultures treat sustained eye contact with an older person as rude, so insisting on it can make communication harder.
- 6
What does an open posture communicate?
Model answer
An open posture, with arms uncrossed and the body turned towards the person, communicates willingness to listen, whereas folded arms and a turned shoulder read as impatience.
