- 3 things to know
- A2 1
Overview
Term research objective, difference between an aim and an objective and term hypothesis.
What you need to know
Answer each one before you reveal it.
What is the difference between an aim and an objective?
Define the term hypothesis.
Questions from this subtopic
Each one with the model answer underneath.
- 1
Define the term research objective.
Model answer
A research objective is a specific, measurable statement of what one part of a study sets out to find out.
- 2
What is the difference between an aim and an objective?
Model answer
An aim states the overall purpose of the research in one broad sentence, while objectives break that aim into specific steps that can each be measured.
- 3
Define the term hypothesis.
Model answer
A hypothesis is a testable statement predicting a relationship between two variables, which the evidence collected then supports or contradicts.
- 4
What is a null hypothesis?
Model answer
A null hypothesis states that there is no relationship between the variables studied and that any difference found is down to chance.
- 5
What makes a hypothesis testable?
Model answer
A hypothesis is testable when both of the things it links can be measured, and when the data collected could show the prediction to be wrong.
- 6
What does it mean to operationalise a variable?
Model answer
Operationalising a variable means defining it so that it can be measured, such as measuring concentration by a self-rated score rather than leaving it as an idea.
