Questions from this subtopic
Each one with the model answer underneath.
- 1
What is a code of practice?
Model answer
A code of practice is a statement by a regulator of the standards of conduct and practice expected of the workers it registers, setting out what they must do and what they must not, and providing the basis on which their fitness to practise is judged.
- 2
What is the regulatory role of the Northern Ireland Social Care Council?
Model answer
The Northern Ireland Social Care Council registers social workers and social care workers, sets and enforces the standards of conduct and practice they must meet, approves their training, and can remove a worker from the register where their fitness to practise is impaired, which is what makes the code enforceable rather than advisory.
- 3
What does the Nursing and Midwifery Council do?
Model answer
The Nursing and Midwifery Council maintains the register of nurses, midwives and nursing associates, sets the standards for their education and practice, publishes the professional code they must follow, and investigates concerns about a registrant's fitness to practise.
- 4
What does the General Medical Council do?
Model answer
The General Medical Council registers and licenses doctors, sets the standards of practice expected of them, oversees medical education, and can restrict or remove a doctor's licence where their fitness to practise is impaired.
- 5
Why does registration matter to a service user?
Model answer
Registration means the worker has met a required standard of training, is bound by a code, and can be removed from the register if they fall below it, so the public has a route to redress and unsuitable people can be prevented from practising.
- 6
How does a code of practice guide a worker facing a difficult decision?
Model answer
The code states the principles the worker must apply — protecting rights and promoting interests, maintaining trust, respecting confidentiality, being accountable — so a worker can test a proposed course of action against them rather than relying on personal judgement alone.
