Questions from this subtopic

Each one with the model answer underneath.

  1. 1

What are the four categories of need used in health and social care?

    Model answer

Needs are usually grouped as physical, intellectual, emotional and social, and a good assessment considers all four rather than only the one that brought the person to the service.

  2. 2

Give examples of a person's physical needs.

    Model answer

Physical needs include food and drink, warmth and shelter, personal hygiene, mobility and exercise, sleep, freedom from pain, and help with medication or a health condition.

  3. 3

Give examples of a person's intellectual needs.

    Model answer

Intellectual needs include stimulation and occupation, learning and education, information about their own care, the chance to make choices, and activity that keeps the mind engaged.

  4. 4

Give examples of a person's emotional needs.

    Model answer

Emotional needs include being valued and respected, security, affection, the chance to express feelings including grief and anger, privacy and dignity, and confidence in the people caring for them.

  5. 5

Give examples of a person's social needs.

    Model answer

Social needs include contact with family and friends, the company of others, belonging to a community or group, shared activity, and relationships beyond those with paid staff.

  6. 6

Why must all four categories be considered together?

    Model answer

The categories interact: a person in pain withdraws socially, an isolated person eats poorly, a person with nothing to do becomes low in mood. Meeting only the physical need leaves the person cared for but not well.
