  1. 1

    What is operant conditioning?

    Model answer

Operant conditioning is learning in which the consequences of a behaviour make that behaviour more or less likely to happen again.

  2. 2

    What is positive reinforcement?

    Model answer

Positive reinforcement is adding something the child values, such as praise or a sticker, immediately after a behaviour so that the behaviour is repeated.

  3. 3

    What is negative reinforcement?

    Model answer

Negative reinforcement is removing something unpleasant when a behaviour occurs, so the child repeats the behaviour in order to escape the unpleasant thing.

  4. 4

A child whines until the adult gives in. Which process has acted on the adult, and what will it produce?

    Model answer

Negative reinforcement has acted on the adult, because giving in removed the whining, so the adult becomes more likely to give in the next time.

  5. 5

    What is extinction?

    Model answer

Extinction is the fading away of a behaviour once the reinforcement that was keeping it going is withdrawn.

  6. 6

Why must reinforcement be immediate with a young child?

    Model answer

A young child cannot connect a reward given hours later with what they did, so a delayed reward reinforces nothing at all.
