Questions from this subtopic
Each one with the model answer underneath.
- 1
Why is an informal carer often the first to notice that an adult's needs are changing?
Model answer
An informal carer sees the person every day and over a long period. A gradual loss of appetite, a change in mood, increasing confusion or a new difficulty on the stairs is visible to them long before it would appear at an appointment. This is why services ask a carer what they have noticed.
- 2
Name three tasks an informal carer commonly does.
Model answer
An informal carer commonly helps with personal care, prepares meals and manages medicines and appointments.
- 3
What should a service consider when the person caring for an adult is a child?
Model answer
The service must consider whether the caring role is affecting the child's schooling, health and childhood, and whether tasks are being done that no child should be doing. It should also ask whether the adult's own package of care is large enough. The child is entitled to support in their own right and a referral may be needed.

Exhaustion, broken sleep and injury from lifting are three physical difficulties an informal carer may face.

Guilt, resentment and grief at the change in the relationship are three emotional difficulties an informal carer may face.
- 6
How can caring affect a carer's finances?

A carer may cut their hours or leave work altogether at the very time household costs for heating, laundry and travel are rising.
