- 3 things to know
- A2 2
Overview
Three main types of blood vessel, structure of an artery and relate it to its function and structure of a vein and relate it to its function.
What you need to know
Answer each one before you reveal it.
Describe the structure of an artery and relate it to its function.
Why do veins contain valves?
Questions from this subtopic
Each one with the model answer underneath.
- 1
Name the three main types of blood vessel.
Model answer
The three main types of blood vessel are arteries, veins and capillaries.
- 2
Describe the structure of an artery and relate it to its function.
Model answer
An artery has a thick wall of muscle and elastic tissue and a narrow lumen, which withstands and smooths the high pressure of blood leaving the heart.
- 3
Describe the structure of a vein and relate it to its function.
Model answer
A vein has a thinner wall, a wider lumen and valves along its length, because blood returning to the heart is at low pressure.
- 4
Why do veins contain valves?
Model answer
Valves in a vein stop blood flowing backwards, so contraction of the surrounding skeletal muscle pushes the blood on towards the heart.
- 5
How is a capillary adapted for exchange?
Model answer
A capillary wall is only one cell thick, which gives a very short diffusion distance for oxygen, glucose and carbon dioxide to cross.
- 6
Why does a capillary network spread throughout a tissue?
Model answer
A dense capillary network means no cell in the tissue is far from a blood supply, so exchange with every cell stays rapid.
