Answer each one before you reveal it.
What is an observation chart?
Distinguish participant observation from non-participant observation.
Questions from this subtopic
Each one with the model answer underneath.
- 1
Define observation as a method of primary research.
Model answer
Observation is a method in which the researcher watches and records behaviour as it happens rather than asking people to report it.
- 2
What is an observation chart?
Model answer
An observation chart is a prepared grid of behaviour categories on which the researcher tallies each occurrence during a set period.
- 3
Distinguish participant observation from non-participant observation.
Model answer
A participant observer joins in with the group being studied, while a non-participant observer watches from outside without taking part.
- 4
Distinguish covert observation from overt observation.
Model answer
Covert observation is carried out without those observed knowing, while overt observation is done openly with their knowledge and permission.
- 5
What is the ethical problem with covert observation in a care setting?
Model answer
Covert observation cannot obtain informed consent, so it is very difficult to justify in a care setting unless the behaviour is entirely public.
- 6
What is a structured observation?
Model answer
A structured observation counts occurrences of categories defined in advance, which produces numbers rather than a written description.
