Questions from this subtopic
Each one with the model answer underneath.
- 1
What does the value of promoting individual rights and choices require of a practitioner?
Model answer
Promoting individual rights and choices requires a practitioner to tell a person what their options are, offer real alternatives and act on the decision the person makes.
- 2
Name five rights a service user can expect in a health or social care setting.
Model answer
A service user can expect the right to choice, to confidentiality, and to protection from abuse and harm. Equal and fair treatment and consultation about their own care are the other two rights.
- 3
Give three everyday choices a residential home should offer a resident.
Model answer
A residential home should let a resident choose what to eat, what to wear and when to get up or go to bed.
- 4
What is meant by a service user's right to consultation?
Model answer
The right to consultation means a person is asked for their views before decisions about their care are made. The views the person gives must be recorded and taken seriously.
- 5
Explain why offering a choice between two options a person dislikes is not genuine choice.
Model answer
Genuine choice requires options the person would actually want and enough information to compare them, so a token pair of unwanted options only appears to hand over the decision.
- 6
What is an advocate?
Model answer
An advocate is someone who speaks on a person's behalf, or supports that person to put their own views across. Advocacy is needed where a person finds it hard to be heard alone.
