What you need to know

Why is Northern Ireland's structure described as integrated?
Give three benefits of an integrated approach.
Questions from this subtopic
Each one with the model answer underneath.
- 1
What is meant by an integrated approach to care?
Model answer
An integrated approach means health and social care are planned, funded and delivered together around the person, rather than as separate services the person has to move between.
- 2
Why is Northern Ireland's structure described as integrated?
Model answer
Since the Health and Personal Social Services (Northern Ireland) Order 1972, health and social services have been managed by one set of organisations, so a Trust is responsible for both hospital treatment and social work in its area.
- 3
Give three benefits of an integrated approach.
Model answer
Integration allows one assessment to serve several services, avoids a person being passed between organisations, allows a hospital discharge to be arranged with the home care that makes it safe, and lets money be moved to where the need is rather than defended by each organisation.
- 4
Give three difficulties with an integrated approach.
Model answer
Professionals from different backgrounds have different training, language and priorities; records and information systems may not connect; and integration on paper does not by itself change how teams work day to day, which is the criticism the Bengoa Report made.
- 5
What is community care?
Model answer
Community care is the provision of care and support that allows a person to live in their own home or in a homely setting in the community, rather than in a hospital or long-stay institution.
- 6
Why did policy shift from institutional to community care?
Model answer
Long-stay institutions were criticised for poor conditions and for removing people's independence and contact with ordinary life, research suggested better outcomes at home, and community provision was expected to cost less.
