Questions from this subtopic
Each one with the model answer underneath.
- 1
Name six major public health issues in the United Kingdom.
Model answer
Obesity and poor diet, physical inactivity, smoking and tobacco use, alcohol and drug misuse, mental ill health and suicide, and sexual health, alongside the health inequalities that run through all of them.
- 2
Why is obesity treated as a public health issue rather than a personal matter?
Model answer
Obesity has risen across the whole population rather than in isolated individuals, which points to changes in food supply, portion size, price, marketing and physical activity, and it drives type 2 diabetes, heart disease, some cancers and joint disease at a scale services cannot absorb.
- 3
What are the health consequences of smoking?
Model answer
Smoking causes lung cancer and other cancers, chronic obstructive pulmonary disease, coronary heart disease and stroke, and it harms others through second-hand smoke and harms the unborn child in pregnancy.
- 4
Why is smoking a particular concern in the most deprived areas?
Model answer
Smoking rates are substantially higher in the most deprived groups, so smoking is one of the largest single contributors to the gap in life expectancy between the richest and poorest areas.
- 5
What harms are associated with alcohol misuse?
Model answer
Alcohol misuse causes liver disease, some cancers, high blood pressure and dependence; it contributes to accidents, injury, violence and drowning; and it damages families through neglect, domestic abuse and financial harm.
- 6
Why is mental ill health a public health priority?
Model answer
Mental ill health is common, it begins for most people before adulthood, it reduces life expectancy through physical illness and suicide, and it affects a person's education, work and relationships as well as their health.
