Questions from this subtopic
Each one with the model answer underneath.
- 1
What is poor practice in a care setting?
Model answer
Poor practice is care that falls below the standard a service user is entitled to expect, whether through neglect, poor training, indifference or routines that suit staff rather than people.
- 2
Distinguish poor practice from abuse.
Model answer
Poor practice is care that falls short of the expected standard, often without any intention to harm, while abuse is a deliberate or reckless act or omission that causes harm or distress to a person.
- 3
Give four signs that would make you suspect poor practice in a residential home.
Model answer
Residents left in nightclothes into the afternoon, call bells out of reach, staff speaking about people rather than to them, and a high turnover of care assistants are all warning signs.
- 4
Name four common causes of poor practice.
Model answer
Persistent short staffing, inadequate training, weak or absent supervision, and a management culture that discourages staff from raising concerns are common causes of poor practice.
- 5
What is a closed culture in a care service?
Model answer
A closed culture is one where a service has little contact with families, advocates or outside inspection, so poor practice becomes normal and goes unchallenged.
- 6
How would you judge the validity of evidence about an example of poor practice?
Model answer
Validity is judged by asking who produced the evidence and why, and whether an independent investigation confirmed it. How recent the evidence is, and whether more than one source reports the same thing, also matter.
