- 3 things to know
- AS 2

What you need to know
Answer each one before you reveal it.
What is a handover, and what does a good one contain?
What does the SBAR tool stand for, and why is it used?
Questions from this subtopic
Each one with the model answer underneath.
- 1
Name four ways members of a care team communicate with one another.
Model answer
Staff briefings at the start of a shift, team meetings with minutes, written handover notes and a shared communication book are four ways members of a care team communicate.
- 2
What is a handover, and what does a good one contain?
Model answer
A handover is the exchange of information when one shift takes over from another, and a good one covers changes in each person's condition, what was done, what is outstanding and what needs watching.
- 3
What does the SBAR tool stand for, and why is it used?
Model answer
SBAR stands for situation, background, assessment and recommendation, and the structure is used so that an urgent message reaches the listener complete and in a predictable order.
- 4
Why are minutes of a meeting kept?
Model answer
Minutes record what was decided, who agreed to do it and by when, so an absent colleague can catch up and the actions can be checked at the next meeting.
- 5
Give two purposes of a regular staff briefing at the start of a shift.
Model answer
A briefing tells staff which service users need particular attention that day. Everybody receives the same information at the same time, so nobody works from an out of date picture.
- 6
What is supervision, and how does it contribute to communication within a team?
Model answer
Supervision is a regular one-to-one meeting between a worker and their manager to review practice. Supervision gives a worker a protected place to raise concerns that would not surface in a group.
