Questions from this subtopic
Each one with the model answer underneath.
- 1
What is meant by demography?
Model answer
Demography is the study of the size, structure and distribution of a population and of how it changes through births, deaths and migration.
- 2
What is an ageing population?
Model answer
An ageing population is one in which the proportion of older people is rising, caused by people living longer and by fewer children being born, so the average age of the population increases.
- 3
What causes people to live longer?
Model answer
Life expectancy has risen through better nutrition and housing, clean water and sanitation, immunisation, advances in medicine and surgery, safer workplaces and falling rates of smoking.
- 4
How does an ageing population affect the demand for services?
Model answer
More people live with long-term conditions and with several at once, so demand rises for general practice, hospital care, domiciliary care, residential and nursing home places, and for support to carers, at the same time as the working-age population funding them shrinks in proportion.
- 5
What is the dependency ratio?
Model answer
The dependency ratio compares the number of people not of working age — children and older people — with the number of working age, and a rising ratio means fewer taxpayers supporting more people who need services.
- 6
How does a falling birth rate affect services?
Model answer
Fewer children reduce demand for maternity, early years and school places over time, but they also reduce the future working population, which is what makes an ageing population harder to fund.
