Evaluating the methodology and recommending improvements
- 3 things to know
- A2 1
Overview
Sampling bias, researcher bias and non-response bias.
What you need to know
Answer each one before you reveal it.
How is the reliability of the primary method judged?
Define researcher bias.
Questions from this subtopic
Each one with the model answer underneath.
- 1
What does it mean to evaluate the methodology of a study?
Model answer
Evaluating the methodology means judging how well the method, the tool and the sample actually answered the objectives, and saying where they fell short.
- 2
On what grounds are secondary sources evaluated?
Model answer
Secondary sources are evaluated on their relevance to the objectives, how recent they are, who wrote them and whether the evidence behind them is shown.
- 3
How is the validity of the primary method judged after the event?
Model answer
The primary method counts as valid where the tool measured what the objectives required, and questions that missed the point weaken that claim.
- 4
How is the reliability of the primary method judged?
Model answer
Reliability is judged by whether the same tool, used again with a similar group in the same way, would be likely to produce a similar result.
- 5
Define sampling bias.
Model answer
Sampling bias occurs when the way participants were chosen leaves out part of the population, for example by surveying only those who attend a clinic.
- 6
Define researcher bias.
Model answer
Researcher bias occurs when the wording of questions or the reading of results is shaped by what the researcher expected to find.
