Scope, subprograms and parameter passing
- 3 things to know
- AS Unit 1
Overview
Scope of a variable, local variable and global variable.
What you need to know
Answer each one before you reveal it.
What is a global variable?
What is meant by the lifetime of a variable?
Questions from this subtopic
Each one with the model answer underneath.
- 1
What is meant by the scope of a variable?
Model answer
The scope of a variable is the region of the program in which that name can be referred to and the variable it names is accessible.
- 2
What is a local variable?
Model answer
A local variable is declared inside a subprogram and can only be used within it, so nothing outside that subprogram can read or change it.
- 3
What is a global variable?
Model answer
A global variable is declared outside every subprogram and can be read and changed by any part of the program.
- 4
What is meant by the lifetime of a variable?
Model answer
The lifetime is the period during execution for which the variable occupies memory and keeps its value, which for a local variable lasts only while its subprogram is running.
- 5
State two reasons for preferring local variables to global ones.
Model answer
A local variable cannot be altered accidentally by an unrelated part of the program, and its memory is released when the subprogram ends.
- 6
What is a subprogram?
Model answer
A subprogram is a named block of code that performs one task and can be called from elsewhere in the program whenever that task is needed.

What is inside Levo
Six ways to work the same material.
Every question in Algorithms and Programs, on a schedule.
Attempt a question from memory, write the correct version, then attempt it again. Levo records the jump between your first attempt and your last, and brings each question back on the day you are due to forget it.
