Organisation of Data: Files and Records
Fixed and variable length records
- 3 things to know
- AS Unit 1
Overview
Fixed length record and variable length record.
What you need to know
Answer each one before you reveal it.
Give two disadvantages of fixed length records.
Give two disadvantages of variable length records.
Questions from this subtopic
Each one with the model answer underneath.
- 1
What is a fixed length record?
Model answer
It is a record in which every field is given a set size, so every record in the file occupies exactly the same number of bytes whatever it holds.
- 2
What is a variable length record?
Model answer
It is a record that occupies only as much space as its data actually needs, so records in the same file differ in size.
- 3
How does a program find where one field ends in a variable length record?
Model answer
Either a separator character is written between the fields, or each field is preceded by a small count saying how many characters follow.
- 4
Give two advantages of fixed length records.
Model answer
The position of any record can be calculated from its number, which makes direct access possible, and an amended record can be written straight back over the old one because it is exactly the same size.
- 5
Give two disadvantages of fixed length records.
Model answer
Space is wasted whenever a value is shorter than the field it sits in, and a value longer than the allowance has to be truncated or refused.
- 6
Give two advantages of variable length records.
Model answer
No space is wasted on padding out short values, and an unusually long value can be stored without redesigning the file.

What is inside Levo
Six ways to work the same material.
Every question in Organisation of Data: Files and Records, on a schedule.
Attempt a question from memory, write the correct version, then attempt it again. Levo records the jump between your first attempt and your last, and brings each question back on the day you are due to forget it.
