Systems Analysis
- 7 subtopics
- 21 things to know
- AS Unit 1
What Systems Analysis covers
Systems Analysis is examined in AS Unit 1, Fundamentals of Computer Science. It covers the systems life cycle and the feasibility study, methods of investigation, analysis, abstraction and decomposition, design and data flow diagrams, testing and changeover, maintenance and backup, recovery and documentation.
Where it is assessed
AS Unit 1
Fundamentals of Computer Science, examined again at A2 at a more demanding level.

What you need to know
Answer each one before you reveal it.
Name three things that must be designed besides the processing.
Describe the grandfather-father-son method of keeping backups.
Name the main stages of the systems life cycle in order.
Why must an analyst investigate the existing system before designing a new one?
What is the purpose of the analysis stage?
What is alpha testing?
What is meant by maintenance of a system?
Why is the sequence of development stages described as a cycle?
Name four methods of investigation available to an analyst.
What is a requirements specification?
Why is alpha testing carried out before anyone outside sees the software?
Name the three types of maintenance.
What must be restored, and in what order, under an incremental regime?
What is a feasibility study?
Describe direct observation as a method of investigation.
Distinguish between a functional and a non-functional requirement.
What is produced at the design stage?
Explain why beta testing finds faults that alpha testing does not.
What is corrective maintenance?
Give one advantage and one drawback of incremental backups compared with full ones.

Questions from this topic
Each one with the model answer underneath.
- 1
What is systems analysis?
Model answer
Systems analysis is the study of an existing situation and its requirements in order to specify a new or improved computerised system that meets them.
- 2
Name the main stages of the systems life cycle in order.
Model answer
The stages are the feasibility study, investigation and analysis, design, implementation and testing, changeover, and then maintenance and evaluation.
- 3
Why is the sequence of development stages described as a cycle?
Model answer
Evaluation and maintenance eventually show that the system can no longer meet the organisation's needs, which triggers a fresh feasibility study and starts the sequence again.
- 4
What is a feasibility study?
Model answer
A feasibility study is a short investigation carried out before development is committed to, deciding whether a workable solution exists and whether it is worth building.
- 5
At what point in the life cycle is a feasibility study carried out?
Model answer
It is carried out first, before any detailed investigation or design work, so that money is not spent on a project that cannot succeed.
- 6
State the possible outcomes of a feasibility study.
Model answer
The project may be recommended as it stands, recommended with a changed scope or budget, or rejected as not worth pursuing.

Systems Analysis revision questions
- What does Systems Analysis cover in WJEC A-Level Computer Science?
- 7 subtopics: the systems life cycle and the feasibility study, methods of investigation, analysis, abstraction and decomposition, design and data flow diagrams, testing and changeover, maintenance and backup, recovery and documentation. Each one has its own page with questions and model answers.
- How is Systems Analysis organised?
- By the WJEC 601-5345-3 specification, subtopic by subtopic, so it matches the order you are taught it in.
