Calculating data transfer rates
- 3 things to know
- A2 Unit 4
Overview
Relationship between file size, transfer rate and time, protocol overhead and bottleneck on a route.
What you need to know
Answer each one before you reveal it.
Distinguish bandwidth from throughput.
State the relationship between file size, transfer rate and time.
Questions from this subtopic
Each one with the model answer underneath.
- 1
What is bandwidth?
Model answer
The maximum rate at which data can be carried by a channel, measured in bits per second.
- 2
Distinguish bandwidth from throughput.
Model answer
Bandwidth is the theoretical maximum of the channel; throughput is the rate actually achieved once overheads, errors and contention are taken into account.
- 3
State the relationship between file size, transfer rate and time.
Model answer
Time equals the amount of data divided by the transfer rate, with both in matching units.
- 4
How long does a 12 megabyte file take over a 4 megabit per second link?
Model answer
12 megabytes is 96 megabits, so 96 divided by 4 gives 24 seconds.
- 5
Why must the byte figure be converted to bits first?
Model answer
Transfer rates are quoted in bits per second and file sizes in bytes, so dividing without converting understates the time eightfold.
- 6
A 500 megabyte backup must complete in 200 seconds. What rate is needed?
Model answer
500 megabytes is 4,000 megabits, so 4,000 divided by 200 gives 20 megabits per second.

What is inside Levo
Six ways to work the same material.
Every question in Communication Networks and File Organisation, on a schedule.
Attempt a question from memory, write the correct version, then attempt it again. Levo records the jump between your first attempt and your last, and brings each question back on the day you are due to forget it.
