Memory and caching
- 3 things to know
- AS Unit 1
Overview
Typically held in a computer's ROM, static RAM and dynamic RAM and levels of the memory hierarchy from fastest to slowest.
What you need to know
Answer each one before you reveal it.
What is typically held in a computer's ROM?
Which of static and dynamic RAM is used for cache, and which for main memory?
Questions from this subtopic
Each one with the model answer underneath.
- 1
What distinguishes RAM from ROM?
Model answer
RAM can be both read and written by the running machine but loses its contents when power is removed, whereas ROM can normally only be read and keeps its contents permanently.
- 2
What is typically held in a computer's ROM?
Model answer
The start-up firmware, which contains the bootstrap program that tests the hardware and loads the operating system from secondary storage.
- 3
What does it mean to say that a memory is volatile?
Model answer
It means the stored contents are lost as soon as the power supply is switched off.
- 4
Distinguish between static RAM and dynamic RAM.
Model answer
Static RAM holds each bit in a latching circuit and needs no refreshing, making it fast but expensive and bulky; dynamic RAM holds each bit as charge in a tiny capacitor that must be refreshed thousands of times a second, making it cheaper and far denser.
- 5
Which of static and dynamic RAM is used for cache, and which for main memory?
Model answer
Cache is built from static RAM for speed, while main memory is built from dynamic RAM for capacity and cost.
- 6
List the levels of the memory hierarchy from fastest to slowest.
Model answer
Registers, then cache, then main memory, then secondary storage.

Six ways to work the same material.
Every question in Hardware: Architecture, Memory and Storage, on a schedule.
Attempt a question from memory, write the correct version, then attempt it again. Levo records the jump between your first attempt and your last, and brings each question back on the day you are due to forget it.
