Interrupts and interrupt handling
- 3 things to know
- A2 Unit 4
Overview
Interrupt service routine and interrupt priority.
What you need to know
Answer each one before you reveal it.
Give three conditions that could generate an interrupt.
Give two further sources of interrupts.
Questions from this subtopic
Each one with the model answer underneath.
- 1
What is an interrupt?
Model answer
A signal to the processor that an event requires attention, causing the current sequence to be suspended.
- 2
Give three conditions that could generate an interrupt.
Model answer
A hardware fault such as a power failure, completion of an input or output transfer, and a timer signalling the end of a time slice.
- 3
Give two further sources of interrupts.
Model answer
A software error such as division by zero or an invalid instruction, and a user action such as pressing a key.
- 4
When does the processor check for an interrupt?
Model answer
At the end of each fetch-execute cycle, before the next instruction is fetched.
- 5
Why is the check made at that point rather than mid-instruction?
Model answer
So that the machine is in a consistent state, with the current instruction complete and the registers meaningful.
- 6
What is an interrupt service routine?
Model answer
The block of code that deals with a particular kind of interrupt.
Other ways to work this
The same content, four other ways.
What is inside Levo
Six ways to work the same material.
Every question in Operating System Management, on a schedule.
Attempt a question from memory, write the correct version, then attempt it again. Levo records the jump between your first attempt and your last, and brings each question back on the day you are due to forget it.
