Utility software
- 3 things to know
- AS Unit 1
Overview
Term utility software, four utility programs and why fragmentation slows down a magnetic hard disc.
What you need to know
Answer each one before you reveal it.
How does utility software differ from an application?
Name four utility programs.
Questions from this subtopic
Each one with the model answer underneath.
- 1
Define the term utility software.
Model answer
Utility software is system software that performs a housekeeping task on the computer itself, maintaining, analysing or protecting the machine and its files.
- 2
How does utility software differ from an application?
Model answer
Utility software works on the computer and its storage, while an application does a job for the user such as writing a letter or editing a photograph.
- 3
Name four utility programs.
Model answer
A disc defragmenter, a backup program, antivirus software and a file compression utility are four.
- 4
What does a disc defragmenter do?
Model answer
A defragmenter rearranges the blocks of each file on a disc so that they are stored together in one continuous run.
- 5
Explain why fragmentation slows down a magnetic hard disc.
Model answer
The read-write head has to move to a different part of the disc for each scattered block, and that physical movement takes far longer than reading the data.
- 6
Why is defragmenting a solid state drive both unnecessary and unwise?
Model answer
A solid state drive reaches any location in the same time, so there is nothing to gain, and the extra writing shortens the life of the memory cells.
Other ways to work this
The same content, four other ways.
What is inside Levo
Six ways to work the same material.
Every question in The Operating System, on a schedule.
Attempt a question from memory, write the correct version, then attempt it again. Levo records the jump between your first attempt and your last, and brings each question back on the day you are due to forget it.
