Levels of permitted access and access control
- 3 things to know
- AS Unit 1
Overview
Access rights, idea of levels of permitted access with an example and principle of least privilege.
What you need to know
Answer each one before you reveal it.
How does a database view protect sensitive fields?
Explain the idea of levels of permitted access with an example.
Questions from this subtopic
Each one with the model answer underneath.
- 1
What are access rights?
Model answer
They are the operations each user or group is permitted on each file or record, such as no access, read only, read and write, or the right to delete.
- 2
Explain the idea of levels of permitted access with an example.
Model answer
Each role is given only the access its work requires, so in a surgery a receptionist may see appointments and contact details while only a clinician may open the medical notes.
- 3
What is the principle of least privilege?
Model answer
Every user and program is given the minimum access needed to do its job and nothing more, so the damage from a mistake or a stolen account is limited.
- 4
How can access be restricted to part of a file rather than all of it?
Model answer
Access can be limited by field, so a user sees only certain columns, or by record, so a manager sees only the records belonging to their own branch.
- 5
How does a database view protect sensitive fields?
Model answer
The view presents only the fields and records a user is entitled to see, and the underlying table is never reached directly, so restricted fields cannot be read even by accident.
- 6
What is an audit trail?
Model answer
It is an automatic log recording who accessed or changed which data and when, kept so that misuse can be detected afterwards and traced to an individual.
Other ways to work this
The same content, four other ways.
What is inside Levo
Six ways to work the same material.
Every question in Data Security and Integrity, on a schedule.
Attempt a question from memory, write the correct version, then attempt it again. Levo records the jump between your first attempt and your last, and brings each question back on the day you are due to forget it.
