Overview

Local area network and a wide area network, star topology and give one advantage of it and bus topology and give one disadvantage of it.

What you need to know

Answer each one before you reveal it.

Your recallNot started
Key term

Distinguish between a local area network and a wide area network.

Evaluation

Describe a star topology and give one advantage of it.

Key term

What do the IEEE 802.3 and IEEE 802.11 families of standards cover?

Questions from this subtopic

Each one with the model answer underneath.

  1. 1

    What is a protocol?

    Model answer

A protocol is an agreed set of rules governing how two devices exchange data, covering matters such as message format, timing, addressing and error handling.

  2. 2

Distinguish between a local area network and a wide area network.

    Model answer

A local area network covers a single site with cabling and equipment the organisation owns itself, while a wide area network spans a large geographical area and relies on communication links provided by other companies.

  3. 3

Describe a star topology and give one advantage of it.

    Model answer

In a star every node has its own dedicated link to a central switch, and one advantage is that a broken cable disconnects only the one node attached to it.

  4. 4

Describe a bus topology and give one disadvantage of it.

    Model answer

In a bus every node attaches to one shared backbone cable, and a disadvantage is that a break anywhere in that cable can bring down the whole network.

  5. 5

Describe a mesh topology and say where it is used.

    Model answer

In a mesh each node links to several others so there are many possible paths between any two, which is why it is used for the internet backbone and for resilient wireless sensor networks.

  6. 6

    Compare a client-server network with a peer-to-peer network.

    Model answer

A client-server network keeps files, accounts and access control on dedicated servers, which makes backup and administration central and consistent, whereas in a peer-to-peer network every machine both offers and uses resources, which is cheap and simple but leaves security and backup to each user.
