Low-level languages
- 3 things to know
- AS Unit 1
Overview
Low-level language, machine code and why a low-level program is not portable.
What you need to know
Answer each one before you reveal it.
What is a low-level language?
What is machine code?
Questions from this subtopic
Each one with the model answer underneath.
- 1
What is a low-level language?
Model answer
A low-level language works directly with the instruction set and registers of one particular processor, so each statement corresponds closely to a machine operation.
- 2
What is machine code?
Model answer
Machine code is the binary instruction set the processor executes directly, needing no translation of any kind.
- 3
Why is machine code difficult for a person to write?
Model answer
Every instruction and address is a pattern of binary digits with nothing to indicate its meaning, so a single wrong bit is both easy to write and almost impossible to spot.
- 4
Why is assembly language described as a low-level language?
Model answer
Each of its statements stands for a single machine operation on one particular processor, so the programmer works in terms of the hardware rather than the problem.
- 5
Why does assembly language use mnemonics rather than binary?
Model answer
A short abbreviation such as ADD or LDA can be read and remembered by a person, whereas the binary pattern for the same operation gives no clue to its meaning.
- 6
State the relationship between an assembly language instruction and a machine code instruction.
Model answer
The relationship is one to one, because each assembly statement translates into exactly one machine instruction.
Other ways to work this
The same content, four other ways.
What is inside Levo
Six ways to work the same material.
Every question in Principles of Programming, on a schedule.
Attempt a question from memory, write the correct version, then attempt it again. Levo records the jump between your first attempt and your last, and brings each question back on the day you are due to forget it.
