Normalisation to third normal form
- 3 things to know
- AS Unit 1
Overview
Repeating group, partial dependency and transitive dependency.
What you need to know
Answer each one before you reveal it.
State the condition a table must meet to be in first normal form.
State the condition a table must meet to be in second normal form.
Questions from this subtopic
Each one with the model answer underneath.
- 1
What is normalisation?
Model answer
Normalisation is the process of restructuring tables so that each fact is stored once, which removes duplication and the update problems that come with it.
- 2
What is a repeating group?
Model answer
A repeating group is a set of fields holding several values of the same kind in one record, such as Subject1, Subject2 and Subject3.
- 3
State the condition a table must meet to be in first normal form.
Model answer
Every field must hold a single value and the table must contain no repeating group.
- 4
How is a repeating group removed from a table?
Model answer
The repeated fields are moved into a table of their own, one row per value, carrying the key of the original record as a foreign key.
- 5
What is a partial dependency?
Model answer
A partial dependency is where a non-key field depends on only part of a composite key rather than on the whole of it.
- 6
State the condition a table must meet to be in second normal form.
Model answer
The table must already be in first normal form and contain no partial dependency, so every non-key field depends on the whole key.
Other ways to work this
The same content, four other ways.
What is inside Levo
Six ways to work the same material.
Every question in Database Systems, on a schedule.
Attempt a question from memory, write the correct version, then attempt it again. Levo records the jump between your first attempt and your last, and brings each question back on the day you are due to forget it.
