Character sets and storing characters
- 3 things to know
- AS Unit 1
Overview
Character set and extended ASCII.
What you need to know
Answer each one before you reveal it.
What is a character set?
What is extended ASCII?
Questions from this subtopic
Each one with the model answer underneath.
- 1
What is a character set?
Model answer
A character set is an agreed table that pairs every character with the numeric code used to store it.
- 2
Why must character sets be standardised?
Model answer
So that text saved on one machine appears correctly on another; without an agreed table the same stored code would be displayed as a different character elsewhere.
- 3
How many bits does standard ASCII use, and how many characters does that give?
Model answer
It uses 7 bits, which gives 128 characters covering the English letters, digits, punctuation and control codes.
- 4
What is extended ASCII?
Model answer
Extended ASCII uses 8 bits to give 256 characters, keeping the original 128 and adding accented letters, symbols and line-drawing characters, though the upper half differs between the code pages of different regions.
- 5
The code for capital A is 65. What is the code for capital C?
Model answer
It is 67, because the letters are given consecutive codes in alphabetical order.
- 6
Lower case a has the code 97 and capital A has 65. What is the difference between an upper and a lower case letter?
Model answer
The lower case code is always 32 greater than the upper case code for the same letter.
Other ways to work this
The same content, four other ways.
What is inside Levo
Six ways to work the same material.
Every question in Data Representation and Data Types, on a schedule.
Attempt a question from memory, write the correct version, then attempt it again. Levo records the jump between your first attempt and your last, and brings each question back on the day you are due to forget it.
