- 3 things to know
- A2 Unit 3
Overview
Macro in an assembly language program and just-in-time compilation.
What you need to know
Answer each one before you reveal it.
What is a linker?
What is just-in-time compilation?
Questions from this subtopic
Each one with the model answer underneath.
- 1
Why does an assembler need to make two passes over a source program?
Model answer
The first pass records the address of every label in a symbol table, so that the second pass can supply the correct address wherever a label is used before it has been defined.
- 2
Why is an assembler a much simpler program than a compiler?
Model answer
Each mnemonic corresponds directly to one machine operation, so there is no need to analyse expressions, data types or control structures before code can be produced.
- 3
What is a macro in an assembly language program?
Model answer
A macro is a named group of instructions that the assembler copies into the program wherever the name is written.
- 4
What is a linker?
Model answer
A linker joins the separately translated modules of a program and the library routines it uses into a single executable file.
- 5
What is a loader?
Model answer
A loader copies an executable program into main memory and adjusts any addresses within it so that it runs correctly from wherever it has been placed.
- 6
Give a situation in which a compiler is the right choice of translator, and justify it.
Model answer
Software sold to customers is compiled, because it is translated once and then runs at full speed on every machine while the source remains hidden from the buyer.

What is inside Levo
Six ways to work the same material.
Every question in Programming Paradigms and Translators, on a schedule.
Attempt a question from memory, write the correct version, then attempt it again. Levo records the jump between your first attempt and your last, and brings each question back on the day you are due to forget it.
