Testing and changeover
- 3 things to know
- AS Unit 1
Overview
Alpha testing, beta testing and acceptance testing.
What you need to know
Answer each one before you reveal it.
Why is alpha testing carried out before anyone outside sees the software?
Explain why beta testing finds faults that alpha testing does not.
Questions from this subtopic
Each one with the model answer underneath.
- 1
What is alpha testing?
Model answer
Alpha testing is testing carried out by the development organisation itself, in-house, before the software is released to anyone outside it.
- 2
Why is alpha testing carried out before anyone outside sees the software?
Model answer
The obvious faults are found and corrected cheaply while the developers still have the code in front of them, and releasing an untested product would damage their reputation.
- 3
What is beta testing?
Model answer
Beta testing releases the software to a group of real users outside the development organisation, who use it normally and report the faults they meet.
- 4
Explain why beta testing finds faults that alpha testing does not.
Model answer
Real users run the software on a far wider variety of hardware and use it in ways the developers never anticipated, which exposes faults no planned test would have covered.
- 5
What is acceptance testing?
Model answer
Acceptance testing is the customer's own testing of the finished system against the agreed requirements, to decide whether to accept and pay for it.
- 6
Who decides whether acceptance testing has been passed?
Model answer
The customer decides, judging the system against the requirements specification that was agreed at the start.

What is inside Levo
Six ways to work the same material.
Every question in Systems Analysis, on a schedule.
Attempt a question from memory, write the correct version, then attempt it again. Levo records the jump between your first attempt and your last, and brings each question back on the day you are due to forget it.
