Validation of input data
- 3 things to know
- AS Units 1 and 2
Overview
Why validated data can still be wrong, range check and presence check.
What you need to know
Answer each one before you reveal it.
Explain why validated data can still be wrong.
How does a check digit work?
Questions from this subtopic
Each one with the model answer underneath.
- 1
What is validation?
Model answer
Validation is an automatic check made by a program that data entered is sensible and of the expected form before it is accepted.
- 2
Distinguish validation from verification.
Model answer
Validation checks that data is reasonable and correctly formed; verification checks that the data entered matches the source it was copied from.
- 3
Give two methods of verification.
Model answer
Entering the data twice and comparing the two copies, and proof reading the entry against the original document on screen.
- 4
Explain why validated data can still be wrong.
Model answer
A check can only test whether a value is possible, not whether it is true, so a plausible but mistyped date or amount will be accepted.
- 5
What is a range check, and give an example.
Model answer
It tests that a numeric value lies between stated limits, for example that a month entered is between 1 and 12.
- 6
What is a presence check?
Model answer
It confirms that a compulsory field has actually been filled in and has not been left empty.

What is inside Levo
Six ways to work the same material.
Every question in Practical Programming, on a schedule.
Attempt a question from memory, write the correct version, then attempt it again. Levo records the jump between your first attempt and your last, and brings each question back on the day you are due to forget it.
