Input and output devices and their uses

  • 3 things to know
  • AS Unit 1

Overview

Recall questions on barcode and RFID, optical mark against optical character recognition, capacitive and resistive touchscreens, sensors and actuators, why an analogue-to-digital converter is needed, and choosing a device for a cash machine, a delivery round or a user who cannot use their hands.

Key term

Why is an analogue-to-digital converter needed between a sensor and a computer?

Key term

Distinguish between an input device and an output device.

Key term

Give two reasons a warehouse might tag its stock with RFID rather than barcodes.

Questions from this subtopic

Each one with the model answer underneath.

  1. 1

Distinguish between an input device and an output device.

    Model answer

An input device converts a real-world action or quantity into data the machine can process, while an output device converts processed data into a form a person or another device can use.

  2. 2

How does a barcode scanner read a code?

    Model answer

It shines light at the printed pattern and measures how much is reflected; the dark bars reflect less than the light gaps, and the widths of the pattern are decoded into a number.

  3. 3

Give two reasons a warehouse might tag its stock with RFID rather than barcodes.

    Model answer

An RFID tag can be read without a clear line of sight and several tags can be read at once, so a whole pallet is counted in one pass.

  4. 4

What is optical mark recognition used for, and why does it suit that use?

    Model answer

It reads pencil marks made in fixed pre-printed positions, such as on multiple-choice answer sheets, and it suits that because the layout never varies so reading is very fast and very accurate.

  5. 5

How does optical character recognition differ from optical mark recognition?

    Model answer

Character recognition analyses the shapes of printed or written characters and turns them into editable text, whereas mark recognition only detects whether a fixed position has been filled in or not.

  6. 6

    Compare capacitive and resistive touchscreens.

    Model answer

A capacitive screen senses the small change in charge caused by a finger and supports several touches at once, while a resistive screen senses pressure pushing two conductive layers together and so also works with a gloved hand or a stylus.
