Program libraries and project management tools
- 3 things to know
- A2 Unit 3
Overview
Program library, application programming interface and one advantage of dynamic linking.
What you need to know
Answer each one before you reveal it.
What is a program library?
State three benefits of calling a library routine rather than writing one.
Questions from this subtopic
Each one with the model answer underneath.
- 1
What is a program library?
Model answer
A program library is a collection of pre-written and tested routines that a programmer can call instead of writing that code again.
- 2
State three benefits of calling a library routine rather than writing one.
Model answer
Development is quicker, the routine has already been tested by many other users, and the programmer needs no expertise in how the task is carried out internally.
- 3
What is an application programming interface?
Model answer
An application programming interface is the published set of routines, the parameters they take and the results they return, through which one piece of software is used by another.
- 4
Distinguish static linking from dynamic linking of a library.
Model answer
Static linking copies the routines into the executable when it is built, while dynamic linking leaves them in a separate file that is loaded when the program runs.
- 5
State one advantage of dynamic linking.
Model answer
A single copy of the library serves many programs and can be corrected once without any of those programs being rebuilt.
- 6
State one risk of dynamic linking.
Model answer
Replacing the shared file with a different version can stop programs that relied on the previous behaviour from working.

What is inside Levo
Six ways to work the same material.
Every question in Software Engineering Tools and Professional Practice, on a schedule.
Attempt a question from memory, write the correct version, then attempt it again. Levo records the jump between your first attempt and your last, and brings each question back on the day you are due to forget it.
