Questions from this subtopic

Each one with the model answer underneath.

  1. 1

Why is the electricity used by data centres an environmental concern?

    Model answer

Data centres together account for on the order of one to two per cent of world electricity demand, and where that electricity is generated from fossil fuels it adds substantially to carbon emissions.

  2. 2

Why do data centres need so much energy beyond running the computers themselves?

    Model answer

Servers convert almost all the power they draw into heat, which must be removed continuously by cooling systems that themselves consume a large amount of electricity.

  3. 3

What does power usage effectiveness measure?

    Model answer

It is the ratio of the total energy used by a data centre to the energy used by its computing equipment alone, so a value of 1.0 would mean nothing at all was spent on cooling and overheads.

  4. 4

Give two ways operators reduce the energy spent on cooling.

    Model answer

Siting centres in cool climates so outside air can be used directly, and running the equipment at higher permitted temperatures so less cooling is needed.

  5. 5

How can the waste heat from a data centre be put to use?

    Model answer

It can be piped to heat nearby homes, offices or swimming pools through a district heating scheme instead of being discharged to the air.

  6. 6

Why does manufacturing a computer have a large environmental cost?

    Model answer

Making the chips and the device consumes a great deal of energy, water and ultra-pure materials, and for a small device this often exceeds the energy it will use in its whole working life.
