Questions from this subtopic

Each one with the model answer underneath.

  1. 1

    Explain the stored program concept.

    Model answer

Program instructions are held in the same main memory as the data they act on, so a new program can be loaded and run without rewiring the machine.

  2. 2

Name the two main units inside the processor and state what each does.

    Model answer

The control unit, which fetches and decodes instructions and coordinates the other parts, and the arithmetic and logic unit, which performs the calculations and logical comparisons.

  3. 3

What is held in the program counter?

    Model answer

The address in main memory of the next instruction to be fetched.

  4. 4

State the purpose of the memory address register.

    Model answer

It holds the address of the location that is currently being read from or written to.

  5. 5

State the purpose of the memory data register.

    Model answer

It holds the data or instruction just brought back from memory, or the value about to be written out to memory.

  6. 6

What does the current instruction register hold?

    Model answer

The instruction that has just been fetched, while it is being decoded and carried out.
