Contingency planning and disaster recovery
- 3 things to know
- AS Unit 1
Overview
Contingency plan, five things a disaster recovery plan should contain and purpose of an uninterruptible power supply.
What you need to know
Answer each one before you reveal it.
Why must the recovery plan itself be kept off site?
Why are backups stored away from the computers they protect?
Questions from this subtopic
Each one with the model answer underneath.
- 1
What is a contingency plan?
Model answer
It is a documented plan setting out in advance what an organisation will do to keep working and to restore its systems and data after a serious incident.
- 2
Name five things a disaster recovery plan should contain.
Model answer
An assessment of the risks, the order in which systems must be restored, who is responsible for each action, contact details for staff and suppliers, and the arrangements for backups and alternative premises.
- 3
Why must the recovery plan itself be kept off site?
Model answer
The disaster it deals with may destroy or make inaccessible the building where it is stored, leaving staff with no instructions at the moment they are needed.
- 4
Why are backups stored away from the computers they protect?
Model answer
A fire, flood or theft affecting the building would otherwise destroy the original data and the only copy at the same time.
- 5
What determines how frequently backups should be taken?
Model answer
How much work the organisation can afford to lose, since everything entered since the last backup must be re-entered by hand.
- 6
Distinguish a hot site from a cold site.
Model answer
A hot site is fully equipped and holds current data so work can move there within minutes or hours; a cold site is premises with power and connections where equipment must first be installed and data restored.
Other ways to work this
The same content, four other ways.
What is inside Levo
Six ways to work the same material.
Every question in Data Security and Integrity, on a schedule.
Attempt a question from memory, write the correct version, then attempt it again. Levo records the jump between your first attempt and your last, and brings each question back on the day you are due to forget it.
