Expert systems
- 3 things to know
- AS Unit 1
Overview
Expert system, purpose of the explanation facility and knowledge elicitation.
What you need to know
Answer each one before you reveal it.
Give three fields in which expert systems are used.
State three benefits an organisation gains from an expert system.
Questions from this subtopic
Each one with the model answer underneath.
- 1
What is an expert system?
Model answer
It is a program that reproduces the decision making of a human specialist within one narrow field, by applying stored rules to the facts of a particular case.
- 2
Name the main components of an expert system.
Model answer
A knowledge base of facts, a set of rules, an inference engine, a user interface and an explanation facility.
- 3
What does the knowledge base hold?
Model answer
It holds the facts and relationships of the subject area, gathered from human specialists and reference material.
- 4
What does the inference engine do?
Model answer
It applies the stored rules to the facts supplied about the current case in order to reach conclusions, and decides which rule to try next and what to ask the user.
- 5
In what form are the rules of an expert system usually written?
Model answer
They are written as conditional rules, taking the form that if certain conditions are met then a stated conclusion or action follows.
- 6
Describe the purpose of the explanation facility.
Model answer
It shows the user which rules and facts led to the conclusion, so the advice can be checked and the user can decide how much to trust it.

What is inside Levo
Six ways to work the same material.
Every question in Types of Software System, on a schedule.
Attempt a question from memory, write the correct version, then attempt it again. Levo records the jump between your first attempt and your last, and brings each question back on the day you are due to forget it.
