Codes of conduct and professional behaviour
- 3 things to know
- A2 Unit 3
Overview
What putting the public interest first requires of a developer and continuing professional development.
What you need to know
Answer each one before you reveal it.
What does a code of conduct require of a member who learns confidential information at work?
Explain why a code requires an honest estimate of cost and time to be given.
Questions from this subtopic
Each one with the model answer underneath.
- 1
What is the purpose of a code of conduct for people working in computing?
Model answer
It sets out the standards of behaviour and competence expected of members, so that clients, employers and the public know what they may rely on.
- 2
Name the four broad areas that a computing code of conduct usually covers.
Model answer
They are the public interest, professional competence and integrity, duty to the employer or client, and duty to the profession.
- 3
Explain what putting the public interest first requires of a developer.
Model answer
Public health, safety, privacy and the environment must be weighed ahead of the interests of the employer and ahead of the developer's own convenience.
- 4
Why does a code require a member to work only within their own competence?
Model answer
Work taken on outside a member's knowledge is likely to be done badly, and the harm falls on people who trusted the member's professional standing.
- 5
What is continuing professional development, and why does a code require it?
Model answer
It is the keeping of knowledge and skills up to date through study and training, and it is required because the technology a member works with changes continually.
- 6
How does a code of conduct deal with a conflict of interest?
Model answer
It requires the conflict to be declared to everyone affected, and the member to withdraw from the decision wherever the conflict cannot be properly managed.
