Translation, source code and object code
- 3 things to know
- AS Unit 1
Overview
Source code, object code and term translator.
What you need to know
Answer each one before you reveal it.
Define the term translator.
Explain why a program that has been compiled usually runs faster than the same program under an interpreter.
Questions from this subtopic
Each one with the model answer underneath.
- 1
What is source code?
Model answer
It is the program as written by the programmer in a high-level or assembly language, in a form a person can read and edit.
- 2
What is object code?
Model answer
It is the low-level output of a translator, made up of machine instructions for a particular processor, which a person cannot easily read.
- 3
Why must a high-level language program be translated before a processor can run it?
Model answer
A processor can only execute instructions in its own machine code, and the statements of a high-level language bear no direct resemblance to those instruction patterns.
- 4
Define the term translator.
Model answer
A translator is a program that converts a program written in one language into an equivalent program in another language, usually from a language people write into one a processor executes.
- 5
Describe what a compiler produces from a complete source program.
Model answer
It produces object code for the whole program in one operation, which can then be run repeatedly without the compiler being present.
- 6
How does an interpreter deal with a source program?
Model answer
It works through the source a statement at a time, translating each statement and carrying it out immediately, so no complete object program is left behind.

What is inside Levo
Six ways to work the same material.
Every question in Software Engineering and Program Construction, on a schedule.
Attempt a question from memory, write the correct version, then attempt it again. Levo records the jump between your first attempt and your last, and brings each question back on the day you are due to forget it.
