Routing, addressing and the internet
- 3 things to know
- AS Unit 1
Overview
Held in a routing table, default gateway and internet and the world wide web.
What you need to know
Answer each one before you reveal it.
What is a hop?
Why does routing need a mechanism to discard old packets?
Questions from this subtopic
Each one with the model answer underneath.
- 1
What does a router do?
Model answer
A router joins separate networks together and forwards each packet on towards its destination by choosing the next network to send it to.
- 2
What is held in a routing table?
Model answer
It lists destination networks, the next router to send traffic to for each one, the interface to use, and a metric such as cost or number of hops.
- 3
Compare static and dynamic routing.
Model answer
Static routes are typed in by an administrator and never change until edited, which is simple and predictable but blind to failures, whereas dynamic routing has routers exchange information and rebuild their tables automatically as links fail or congest.
- 4
What is a hop?
Model answer
A hop is one step of a packet's journey, from one router to the next along the path.
- 5
Why does routing need a mechanism to discard old packets?
Model answer
A misconfiguration can create a loop in which a packet is passed round the same routers for ever, so each packet carries a counter that is reduced at every router and the packet is destroyed when it reaches zero.
- 6
What is a default gateway?
Model answer
It is the router that a device sends a packet to whenever the destination address is not on the device's own local network.

What is inside Levo
Six ways to work the same material.
Every question in Networks and Data Transmission, on a schedule.
Attempt a question from memory, write the correct version, then attempt it again. Levo records the jump between your first attempt and your last, and brings each question back on the day you are due to forget it.
