Backup, recovery and documentation
- 3 things to know
- AS Unit 1
Overview
Grandfather-father-son method of keeping backups, recovery procedure and transaction log.
What you need to know
Answer each one before you reveal it.
What must be restored, and in what order, under an incremental regime?
Give one advantage and one drawback of incremental backups compared with full ones.
Questions from this subtopic
Each one with the model answer underneath.
- 1
What is a backup?
Model answer
A backup is a copy of data kept separately so that the data can be restored if the original is lost, damaged or wrongly altered.
- 2
When is a full backup taken in a typical backup schedule?
Model answer
At a regular interval such as weekly, with faster partial backups taken between one full copy and the next.
- 3
What must be restored, and in what order, under an incremental regime?
Model answer
The last full backup first, then every incremental backup taken since it, applied in the order they were made.
- 4
Give one advantage and one drawback of incremental backups compared with full ones.
Model answer
Each incremental backup is far quicker to take and needs much less storage, but restoring means applying the last full backup and then every incremental one taken since, which takes longer.
- 5
Describe the grandfather-father-son method of keeping backups.
Model answer
Three generations of backup are kept in rotation, with the newest as the son, the previous one as the father and the one before that as the grandfather, so an older copy is still available if the most recent turns out to be faulty.
- 6
Why should a backup copy be stored away from the computer it came from?
Model answer
A fire, flood or theft at the site would otherwise destroy the backup along with the original, leaving nothing to restore from.
