Programming Paradigms and Translators
Functional, declarative and imperative paradigms
- 3 things to know
- A2 Unit 3
Overview
Declarative programming paradigm, functional programming and pure function.
What you need to know
Answer each one before you reveal it.
What is a pure function?
What is a higher-order function?
Questions from this subtopic
Each one with the model answer underneath.
- 1
What is meant by a declarative programming paradigm?
Model answer
A declarative paradigm describes the result that is required rather than the sequence of steps that produces it, leaving the language's own engine to work out how it is obtained.
- 2
What is functional programming?
Model answer
Functional programming builds a program out of the evaluation of mathematical functions, where the result of a function depends only on the arguments given to it.
- 3
What is a pure function?
Model answer
A pure function returns the same result whenever it is given the same arguments and changes nothing outside itself.
- 4
Explain what is meant by a side effect in a program.
Model answer
A side effect is any change a routine makes beyond returning its result, such as altering a global variable, writing to a file or printing to the screen.
- 5
What is a higher-order function?
Model answer
A higher-order function is one that takes another function as an argument or returns a function as its result.
- 6
Why is data described as immutable in a functional language?
Model answer
Values in a functional language are created rather than altered, so once a name has been bound to a value that value cannot be changed.
Other ways to work this
The same content, four other ways.
What is inside Levo
Six ways to work the same material.
Every question in Programming Paradigms and Translators, on a schedule.
Attempt a question from memory, write the correct version, then attempt it again. Levo records the jump between your first attempt and your last, and brings each question back on the day you are due to forget it.
